Natural Products Expo West 2010

We're both relieved and sad that the Natural Products Expo West show is behind us. We'll have to wait another year to see friends and colleagues again. However, before we get too sentimental, we want to go over some of the highlights of the show. Surprisingly, traffic at the show was pretty heavy this year. According New Hope Media, this year's show attracted 56,000 attendees, which may be indicative of the $10 billion increase of total nutrition industry sales in 2009 versus 2008. We exhibited in our clean room themed booth, which show cased our state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities:

We were pleased to see the show embrace social networking technologies such as Twitter and Facebook. Although the supplement section of the show was relatively small compared to previous years, the increased traffic seems to have been consistent across the board. As always, the food section was hustling and bustling. Interestingly, we noticed more mainstream foods that were not necessarily healthy. Similarly, the show had more exhibitors that were showcasing their alcoholic beverages, which may simply indicate how mainstream the nutrition industry has become.

After the show halls closed, the show had plenty of entertainment. Musician Cory Joseph entertained attendees and exhibitors with his acoustic guitar:

Although we won't be exhibiting at Supply Side East next month, we will be at the Natural Marketplace 2010 show in Las Vegas this July. If you didn't get a chance to visit Expo West in Anaheim this past weekend, definitely plan to attend Natural Marketplace in Las Vegas. This year, the venue has changed slightly and it will be held in the Las Vegas Convention Center -- in previous years it was held at the Venetian. If you plan to attend, definitely stop by booth 25067. And if you want to discuss our contract manufacturing and packaging services before then, don't be shy. Just give us a call, toll-free at 1-866-NHKLABS (in the United States only) or e-mail us at info@nhklabs.com.

Haiti Earthquake Relief

In response to the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti last month, we partnered with Vitamin Angels to help with the relief efforts. The following is the full press release:

NHK Laboratories, Inc. Improves Children’s Health Through a Donation to Vitamin Angels

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Every year, around 54 million new children are affected by malnutrition or undernutrition. In areas where undernutrition is already a major public health problem, children and infants exposed to treatable illnesses often become severely ill or die as a result of their weakened immune systems.

Thanks to a donation from NHK Laboratories, Inc. of 2,700 bottles of children’s chewable multiple vitamins, hundreds children at risk of malnutrition will receive supplements. NHK Laboratories, Inc. contacted Vitamin Angels, a non-profit organization that connects essential micronutrients, especially vitamin A, with infants and children under 5 in need around the world, with a generous donation of 81,000 tablets of children’s multiple vitamins. Vitamin Angels is directing the donation to their Thrive to Five program, which provides multivitamins for children and pregnant and lactating mothers in 28 countries as well as domestically.

The generous contribution of essential nutrients from NHK Laboratories, Inc. will go toward improving the health and wellbeing of hundreds of at-risk children. The essential nutrients contained in multiple vitamins, like those donated by NHK Laboratories, Inc., are a critical part of health, including physical and cognitive development. Children who suffer from vitamin deficiencies are unable to reach their full potential. Health, education, productivity and human achievement are compromised.

NHK Laboratories, Inc. is an NPA/NSF/FDA CGMP, ISO 9001:2008, CCOF and QAI Organic, and ISNA Halal certified custom formulator, contract manufacturer, and contract packager of private label dietary supplements, functional foods, and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals. Established in 1987, the company operates two state-of-the-art facilities and employs over 100 highly qualified engineers, scientists, chemists, and microbiologists. For more information visit www.nhklabs.com.

Vitamin Angels is dedicated to reducing child mortality worldwide by advancing availability, access and use of essential micronutrients, especially Vitamin A, to newborns, infants and children under five. In 2009, Vitamin Angels reached more than 11 million infants and children in 40 countries, including the US, with the vital nutrients they need as a foundation for good health. Whole Foods Greenbook Article

We're mentioned in the current issue of Whole Foods Magazine. However, below is the complete interview of Shabbir Akand, our Director, Sales & Marketing:

“Lean manufacturing” seems to be phasing out and transitioning into being very certification-driven (Kosher, Halal and gluten free, cGMP, FDA-Drug cert., etc.). Meaning, companies will go to extra lengths if needed to achieve certification, rather than streamlining. What certifications has your company chosen to pursue and why?

As a veteran member of the dietary supplement industry, we have seen myriad cyclical trends. However, we realized early on -- well before the FDAs dietary supplement GMPs were finalized -- that quality control and quality management systems were a necessary prerequisite for doing business in the 21st century. In 2001, we became one of the first contract manufacturers to receive NNFA's GMP certification. Later, we went on to receive the first ever NSF GMP 9000 certification, which not only required compliance with NSF's GMP certification program, but also combined the international quality management system principles of the ISO 9001:2000 registration. Today, we continue to maintain our third-party GMP certifications with NPA and NSF, as well as remaining ISO 9001:2008 registered. Moreover, we recently received our QAI Organic, CCOF Organic, and ISNA Halal certifications. Finally, we are also FDA CGMP compliant for the new dietary supplement regulations.

How closely do you work with clients when their formulations need improvement, how much counseling do you provide for clients who want to market/advertise/promotional material insight?

Our clients are not only customers, they are our business partners. If our clients are successful, we will invariably be successful as well. That is why our customer service and technical affairs team work extremely closely with our clients on issues ranging from formulation to product labeling and marketing collateral. Our goal is to work synergistically with our clients to produce high-quality, safe, and efficacious dietary supplements that are supported by scientific research. Moreover, we want our clients to market the products we manufacture within the auspices of FDA's labeling rules--ethical product labeling is of paramount important to us.

What’s the coolest piece of machinery or the most exciting piece if equipment you’ve added in the last 2 years?

As a growing firm, our capital expenditure plans inexorably involve investments in automation--both in the factory and the laboratory. And, since we're a contract manufacturer, many of the innovative technologies we utilize are directly incorporated into the factory itself. Nevertheless, we continue to remain impressed with several of our automated Bosch capsule fillers--they're not only extremely efficient, but reliable as well.

Please discuss how this tough economic climate has affected the contract manufacturing industry. For a client with a tight budget, what can you offer to ensure quality at a lower cost?

Historically, the contract manufacturing industry typically experiences growth in economic downturns. The recession of 2007 is certainly not an exception. Recessions are great opportunities to honestly reevaluate a firms' core competency. In economic contractions, many marketing firms that manufacture products themselves realize that the variable costs (e.g., cost of goods, insurance, labor, etc.), the changing regulatory climate, and the huge capital expenditure required to manufacture products internally is not the best use of financial capital. Such firms then turn to contract manufacturers such as ourselves. We partner with our clients -- they are responsible for the marketing and sale of a product, and we assume the responsibility of ensuring products safety, efficacy, and quality. Moreover, because we specialize solely in the contract manufacturing of solid dosage dietary supplements, our core competency translates into efficiency and cost-savings for our clients.

Please describe the services/products/certifications your company offers and their key benefits. What are your most recent offerings?

Our primary service is product formulation and development, contract manufacturing, and contract packaging. We work with our clients to ensure that the products we manufacture, and the products they sell, are safe, pure, and potent. Our clients are confident in our ability to execute because of our reputation and experience. We are one of the most credentialed contract manufacturing firms in the dietary supplement industry. We are NPA and NSF GMP certified, ISO 9001:2008 registered, QAI and CCOF Organic certified, and ISNA Halal certified. Our GMP certifications ensure regulatory compliance domestically, and our ISO 9001:2008 registration is an illustration of our commitment to manufacture quality into our products as opposed to simply testing for quality after the fact. Finally, our organic and religious dietary certifications are part of an ongoing initiative to cater to our clients needs with regard to competitively marketing their products.
